What the press say:
“Michael Welch? Discerning golfers of a certain age will surely remember the name. He was, arguably, the best 16-year-old golfer this country has ever seen. In one glorious summer he won, in turn, the Shropshire Boys' Championship, the Midland Boys’, the English Boys’, the British Boys’, the European Boys’ and the World Boys’ titles. Westwood, the same age and his travelling pal, couldn’t hold a candle to him.” Derek Lawrenson, Daily Mail
“Lee Westwood, who was hitting balls on the practice ground ahead of this week's HSBC World Matchplay Championship at Wentworth, looked up. He had noticed the finals of the Telegraph Junior Championship were in full flow and it had taken him back to 1988 when he entered in the hope of playing in the finals at Penina.
As it was, he failed to get through the qualifying stages. "I had this 79 at Lindrick, but there were too many better scores from the other venues," he recalled wryly.
Today Westwood has millions of air miles under his belt, but at that stage of his career a trip to Penina, in Portugal, would have been quite something. The Telegraph title that year went to his old junior sparring partner, Michael Welch.
‘Michael won everything,’ said Westwood, who then proceeded to list Welch's 10 titles, including the 1990 British Boys.”
